Handsworth is Sheffield’s east-side test centre, located about 20 minutes from the city centre in an industrial estate off Orgreave Way. It’s close to the A57 Sheffield Parkway and easy to reach from the M1 Junction 33 — head westbound on the A630/A57, exit at the Handsworth/Darnall slip road, turn left into Europa Link, then right onto Orgreave Way. Unit 2 is about 120 metres on the left.
The area around Handsworth is completely different to Middlewood. Instead of hills and trams, you’re dealing with fast dual carriageways, large multi-lane roundabouts, industrial estates with HGVs, and the sharp speed transitions on the Sheffield Parkway. It’s a centre that rewards confident, decisive driving.
A57 Sheffield Parkway — This is the big one. The Parkway is a fast dual carriageway with multiple speed zones that change rapidly — 30mph near the city, 40mph through the middle section, and 50mph further out towards the M1. Speed cameras are everywhere. The transition from 50 down to 40 near the AMRC building and then down to 30 at the city entry catches an enormous number of test candidates. You need to know exactly where each limit changes and be prepared to slow down early.
Parkway Markets Roundabout / M1 J33 Area — A large, busy multi-lane roundabout that connects the Parkway with Catcliffe and the motorway junction. This is where your lane discipline is put under a microscope. Read the overhead signs at least 100 metres before the roundabout, get into the correct lane early, and maintain steady speed through the roundabout. Don’t drift across lanes — the road markings can be faded in places.
Handsworth Road & Richmond Road — Residential roads that take you through the Handsworth and Richmond estate areas. Expect parked cars narrowing the road, school zones, and pedestrians. Speed limits are 20-30mph. Keep scanning ahead for hazards.
Retford Road (A630) — A busy route connecting Handsworth towards Rotherham. You’ll likely encounter heavy traffic, bus stops, and multiple pedestrian crossings. Maintain a safe following distance and be ready to stop.
Orgreave Lane & Catcliffe Area — The roads immediately around the test centre are industrial, with large delivery vehicles, awkward junctions, and sometimes poor visibility at turnings. Stay alert for HGVs pulling out of side roads.
Woodhouse Mill & Beighton Road — Some routes take you south through Woodhouse Mill, where you’ll find 20mph zones, tight residential streets, and junctions that require careful observation. These areas test your slow-speed control and ability to deal with pedestrians and cyclists.
Beaver Hill Road & Darnall Road — If your route heads west towards Darnall, you’ll encounter a mix of commercial and residential roads with heavier traffic. Bus lanes, mini-roundabouts, and traffic lights feature heavily.
Perfect your bay parking. Examiners at Handsworth frequently ask candidates to perform a bay park within the test centre’s own car park before heading out on the road. This is often the very first thing you do on your test, so make sure you can reverse into a bay confidently and park within the lines. If you start with a clean bay park, it sets a positive tone for the rest of the test.
Know the Parkway speed zones inside out. This cannot be stressed enough. The A57 Sheffield Parkway speed transitions are the number one reason people fail at Handsworth. Drive the Parkway with your instructor at least 5-6 times before your test, at different times of day. Know exactly where the 50 drops to 40, and where the 40 drops to 30. Watch for the camera signs — they’re your cue to check your speedometer.
Be decisive at roundabouts. The large roundabouts around the Parkway and M1 junction are busy and fast-moving. Hesitating at the entry or changing lanes mid-roundabout will result in a fault. Approach with a plan — check your mirrors, signal early, pick your lane based on your exit, and commit to it.
Watch for HGVs around the industrial estate. The area immediately surrounding the test centre is full of lorries, vans, and delivery vehicles. They can block your view at junctions and pull out with limited warning. Always creep and peep at junctions where your visibility is restricted — don’t just pull out assuming it’s clear.
Practise at different times of day. Traffic around Handsworth varies massively. The Parkway at 9am on a Monday is a very different experience to 2pm on a Wednesday. If your test is in the morning, make sure you’ve practised during rush hour so the traffic doesn’t catch you off guard.
Stay calm with the speed on dual carriageways. Some learners are nervous about driving at 50mph and end up going too slowly, which can also be marked as a fault if you’re holding up traffic. Build your confidence on the Parkway before your test day — you should be comfortable maintaining 50mph in a 50 zone and using your mirrors to check for faster traffic behind you.

Neither centre is objectively easier — they both test to the same DVSA standard. The best choice depends on where you’ve been practising. If you’ve spent most of your lessons in S6, S10, or S5, Middlewood will feel familiar. If you’ve been learning around S13, S12, S2, or S9, Handsworth is the natural choice. Your instructor will know which centre gives you the best chance of passing based on the roads you’re already comfortable with.
