Sheffield is one of the UK’s most challenging cities to learn to drive in — its famous hills, busy roundabouts and complex junctions test learners constantly. Here are the top 5 hardest roads our students find, and how we help.
1. Hillsborough Corner
One of Sheffield’s busiest and most complex junctions, Hillsborough Corner involves multiple lanes, traffic lights, trams and pedestrians all converging at once. Our instructors near Middlewood test centre practise this junction repeatedly with students.
2. Penistone Road (A61)
Penistone Road is a major arterial route with fast-moving traffic, bus lanes and complex lane management. It appears regularly on Middlewood test routes and requires confident lane positioning.
3. The Moor and City Centre
Sheffield city centre has tram lines, bus gates, one-way systems and very heavy pedestrian traffic. Learners who’ve only driven in quieter areas often find the city centre overwhelming at first.
4. Manchester Road Hill (S10)
The steep hills in Broomhill and Crookes — particularly around Manchester Road — are notorious for difficult hill starts in manual cars. Our instructors spend extra time on these with students doing S10 lessons.
5. Woodhouse Mill Roundabout
On the Handsworth test routes, Woodhouse Mill roundabout trips up many learners with its unusual layout and fast approach speeds. We practise this specifically with students preparing for the Handsworth test.
